PRO TIPS: Developing a routine

This article is to help you be more consistent and help you develop a checklist. Baseball players, golfers, tennis players, billard players…etc. Developing a routine will force you to give more thought to what you are doing and help your concentration. When I am in competition I think about what I want to do before I get on the approach. I have already decided what board on the approach I want to stand on and what target I am going to aim at. Once I get on the approach I have a checklist or routine I follow.

Checklist
1. Get my feet set on the proper board and proper distance from foul line.
2. Get my right elbow tucked in close to my body.
3. Get my hand in the proper starting position.
4. Use my left hand to help support weight ball.
5. Flex my knees and make sure my weight is balanced.
6. Set my ball in alignment with my target.

This just happens to be my own personal checklist, each bowler is different and may add or subtract from this list. With practice most of these things will become automatic. Bowling is a game of repetition and you must develop a consistent routine. If you stand in a different place on the approach or a different distance from the foul line on each shot you will be inconsistent.

When you are in competition, isolate each shot and do not let a previous bad shot distract you from your current shot. The more you discipline yourself to stick to your routine the better you will perform under pressure.
