Veteran McClain leads the way in qualifying in 39th annual GDBA Masters

WATERFORD -- The 39th annual Greater Detroit Bowling Association Masters tournament qualifying wrapped up Sunday. Feb. 3 with veteran Fred McClain of Allen Park leading the eight game qualifying round with 1,862.

McClain averaged 232.75 for the two days of qualifying rounds on the very demanding lane conditions. Two steady rounds of 972 and 890 propelled him to the lead. McClain, the 1978 GDBA Masters champion, had games of 213-226-279-254-223-217-227-223. His total produced a 6-pin lead over PBA veteran Harold Sullins of Chesterfield Township. McClain earns $125 for being high qualifier. McClain will face the winner of a rolloff match between 1999 champion Joe Krajenke of Clinton Township and 1988 champion Dave Tulak of Wyandotte in first round match play Saturday.

Sullins followed a Saturday block of 959 with 897 on Sunday to be seeded second. He faces 1997 champion Ken Kossick of Canton in the first round.

Defending champion Mark Moore of Macomb Township will face Jerry Owczarski of South Lyon in his first match in an attempt to become only the third back-to-back champion. The others were Pat Iannucci (1974 & 75) and Dick Beattie (1980 & 81).

The entire 160 player field averaged 190.84, with the top 32 finalists averaging 210.98 on lane conditions which produced a high game of 298 by Brian Peczynski of Canton and eight four game sets over 900 from the best bowlers in the Greater Detroit Bowling Association. The event was run under the tight Sport Bowling specifications from the American Bowling Congress.

Match play begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Feb. 9 at 300 Bowl in the double elimination match play format. The final match is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. For a complete listing of entrants visit www.gdba.com under tournament results and 2001 GDBA Masters.
