52nd annual Hamtramck Singles Classic kicks off January 5

A tournament rich in tradition and rich in prizes, the Hamtramck Singles Classic will celebrate its 52nd anniversary with opening squads on Saturday, January 5 at Hazel Park Bowl in Hazel Park, Michigan. Peter Berthiaume, a 179 average bowler from Canada, rolled a record score on May 6 to win the top prize in last years' tournament.

Berthiaume recorded games of 258-242-254-297 for an actual pinfall of 1051. Combined with his handicap of 126, he totaled a record 1179. He bowled three times in the tournament, and his two best scores, totaling 2188, also gave him the eight-game top prize of $1,500. Berthiaume also bowled with a number of partners in the doubles division, combining with three Canadian bowling buddies to win the top three prizes of $2,500, $1,500 and $1,300.

Christopher Drake of Baltimore, Maryland, rolled the high optional scratch score of 1042 to take the top prize of $2,500.

The tournament continues to grow in all catagories, The "Singles" had 7,200 entries (6,852 last year), the doubles had 6,956 (6,755 last year), 1,431 in the scratch division (1,205 last year) 720 in the ladies division ( 624 last year), and 613 in the seniors (605 last year).
