Cruchon Tournament raises over $16,000

Participants in the 12th annual Steve Cruchon Memorial Pro-Am helped raise over $16,000 for the Karmanos Cancer Institute and the International Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum in St. Louis. The one day event attracted some of the area's top bowlers, who teamed with amateurs in a doubles format.

The team of Ken Thompson and Ralph Rowland defeated the team of John DeCruydt and Greater Detroit Hall of Famer Ken Charrette, 505-436, to win the tournament. In the semi-finals, DeCruydt/Charrette, who lead qualifying with a 1343 series, downed the team of Mike Lotito and Hub Hemmen, 402-364, while the Thompson/Rowland duo slipped by Doane Moos and John Chmelko, Jr., 408-402, to set up the championship finals.

In the final match, Thompson and Rowland exploded for the highest team score in a Cruchon final match by recording games of 267 and 236, respectively. DeCruydt and Charrette chipped in a respectable 218 and 215, but settled for the runner-up spot.

"it's a big thrill to win this tournament," said Rowland. "But more importantly, we raised alot of money for a good cause."

The event is a tribute to Steve Cruchon, an ABC Hall of Famer and the original editor-publisher of the Bowler's Digest, who passed away in 1986. "Steve was one of the finest gentlemen ever associated with the game of bowling. He did an excellent job as editor of the Bowler's Digest, editor of the GDBA/DWBA Yearbook and as a freelance writer for numerous bowling publications. He was recognized nationally by being elected to the National Bowling Hall of Fame in 1983," related Greater Detroit Bowling Hall of Famer Tom McKasy, whho is the driving force behind the tournament. "Thanks to all the bowlers who collected pledges, donated prizes, sold 50/50 tickets and helped make this year's event a success," McKay added.
