Franz Rolls To Victory in Great Lakes Senior Bowling Association's Buick City Open

LIVONIA -- In the GLSBA's last regular tournament of the 2001 season, 61 players turned out at AMF Town & Country Lanes in Flint in November.

Congratulations to Larry Franz of Redford for winning the title and the $800 first-place prize. Emilio Mora Sr. of Defiance, Ohio, took home the $400 runner-up prize. The high qualifier for the tournament was John Wesley of Utica with 1496, followed by Scotty Laughland of Windsor, Ontario, with 1474 and Franz with 1458. In all there were eight bowlers with a six-game series of over 1400. Marv Newsome of Chesterfield Township had the high game in the qualifying round with 289, and Stan Kruzel of Toledo, Ohio; Roy Biggs of Canton; and Franz each posted a 279 game.

The highlight match of the finals came from the losers bracket: In the quarterfinals Clyde Cooper of Clio shot a 290 game only to see his competitor, Glen Kurtz of Toledo, Ohio, roll a 299 game.

The way to the finals started for Franz with a victory over Bob Noonan of Whitehouse, Ohio, 268 to 224. Franz then lost to Mike David of Montrose, 238 to 234, which sent him to the losers bracket. He went on to defeat Tom Lis of Deford, 204 to 160; Noonan again, 217 to 197; and Enrico Ordorico of Macomb Township, 200 to 185. In the semifinal match, Franz's opponent was Kurtz, who had just completed his 299 game against Cooper; this game marked another barn burner with Franz emerging with a 268 to 266 win.

Mora Sr.'s first match on his way to the finals was against Kruzel, and Mora came away the winner, 228 to 186. His next match was a little closer, with Mora defeating John Milletics of Sandusky, 211 to 192. In Mora's next two matches, 217 was his lucky number as he defeated Ordorico and Kurtz, who shot 210 and 212, respectively. This gave Mora, who has been hampered by a severe groin problem, an opportunity to rest with a two-game bye.

Mora entered the finals needing to win one game to claim the championship, but Franz had other ideas as he came out striking on his way to a 248 to 203 win. In the second game both players found the lane condition a little less favorable, but Franz marked when had to and emerged with a 210 to 181 victory and his second GLSBA title.

The next GLSBA tournament is the Championship tournament Dec. 8, 2001 at Sunnybrook Bowl in Sterling Heights, MI. For information on this or any other tournament call 734-522-9315.
